1. Cosmic Coffee

What’s better than a strong cup of joe in the morning? How about enjoying it with a pond and waterfall garden? Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden in south Austin is your one-stop destination for peace and a pick-me-up in the morning.

Try a cortado while admiring the koi fish swimming through the pond during the spring and fall lily and lotus blooms. If you get hungry, they feature a rotating cast of on-site food trucks. You can’t go wrong with a Cosmic lemonade on a hot Austin day.

2. Hideaway Kitchen & Bar

Keeping in the traditions of the morning, it’s time for breakfast. Have you ever had a pecan pie waffle? The pecan bourbon syrup and maple molasses poured over these warm, fluffy waffles are cozy and a true Texas treat.

Breakfast at the Hideaway is a uniquely Austin way to fuel up for the day. Browse their menu to get your appetite ready.

3. Texas Military Forces Museum

SoCo Village had a great time here over the summer, thanks to the guidance of some of our resident veterans. History fans will revel in the relics and stories of the Texas Army, Texas Air National Guard, and Texas State Guard.

Admission to the Texas Military Forces Museum is free, and you can find it in Building Six on the Camp Mabry campus in west Austin.

4. Lone Star Riverboat

See Austin in one fell swoop aboard The Lone Star cruiser on Lady Bird Lake. These guided boat cruises are only $10 for the 60+ crowd and are every bit as educational as they are fun.

Check out Lone Star Riverboat for additional information on sunset bat watching tours, romantic moonlight tours, and other fun explorations. Cruisers are encouraged to bring their own beverages, although soft drinks are available for purchase.

5. Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail and Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake

If you’re more of a land-lover, you can take in sweeping views of downtown Austin from the Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake. It’s a nature escape in the middle of the city, perfect for getting to know the city’s vibe.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are ten miles of trail to check out, but it’s also nice to pick a bench, watch the ducks and pay respects to the local music legend, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

6. Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar

During our “Diving Through the Decades” series of activities at SoCo Village, we learned about the history of movie theaters. One of the best things to happen to the silver screen in the last 25 years is the Austin staple, Alamo Drafthouse.

Perfect for a matinee to escape the summer heat or special screenings of classic movies, the Alamo serves a full menu along with its screenings. Elevate your film with bottomless popcorn, local libations, and a Bavarian Pretzel Pizza.

7. Austin Rock and Roll Car Museum

In the vein of combining movies and museums, stop by the Austin Rock and Roll Car Museum on the first and third Saturday of every month to see movie production vehicles, race cars, and a variety of music memorabilia.

Admission to see the cars and guitars is free, so get the old band together and check it out.

8. UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum

Charles Umlauf was a prolific sculptor who taught art at the University of Texas for 40 years. In 1985 he and his wife gifted their property overlooking Barton Springs Road and their artwork to the City of Austin. Over the last 35 years, it’s served the city as a cultural hub of looking, learning, and inspiration.

Nestled in the shade, away from the Texas sun, the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum is a stunning oasis of art and nature working together. Sign up for a guided tour or stroll at your own pace to take in a beautiful breath of fresh air.

9. Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ

You’ve likely worked up an appetite from a day of adventure. You can’t leave Austin without trying the BBQ and the tacos. Knock out both at Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ.

Their slow-cooked Texas-raised meats are served Tex or Mex style and simply cannot be missed on your Austin adventure. Take a scroll through their menu and try not to be tempted. These meats are cooked fresh daily, so get there early before they sell out.
